What do we do
NCDs are the leading cause of deaths worldwide
We work to make health a central issue on the agendas of national governments and supranational entities, promoting better decisions for the prevention and control of NCDs.
With the focus on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases, at CLAS we work to promote health policies for tobacco control, promotion of physical activity, healthy eating, control of harmful alcohol consumption and control of air pollution.
Our work is carried out in
3 major fields of action
From science to policy
With the challenge of raising awareness and guaranteeing good practices, we rely on scientific evidence and work to translate that knowledge into information accessible to all. One of the great challenges is to raise awareness among the population, the media, and political decision-makers regarding the importance of measures that protect health and reduce risk factors, diseases, and their consequences.
Collaborations and training
We generate events and exchange spaces so that people and organizations related to these topics have relevant information. At the same time, we involve civil society to raise awareness and involvement in preventing and controlling NCDs. What are our main areas of prevention? Alcohol, tobacco, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, diet, physical activity, environmental health. What are our main areas of NCD control? Promotion of primary health care, patient involvement, search for mechanisms for greater access to essential medicines or essential medicines, promotion of policies that favor access to prevention and treatment through the health system, mechanisms to expand treatments for hypertension, diabetes , among others.
It's my reality
People affected by NCDs testify to how they are affected by these problems. These are young people with diabetes, smokers or those who vape, those who require expensive medications, those who abandoned their treatments due to the COVID-19 pandemic, those who lost a loved one in an accident that involved alcohol, among many others. CLAS gives these people a voice to have meaningful participation in the political processes that support the prevention and control of NCDs. Finally, we all need to understand this reality.
