About CLAS

A network committed to the health of America

CLAS is a coalition that brings together more than 200 Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in America with the purpose of preventing and controlling Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in the region. These are heart and cerebrovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases, and mental disorders.

Founded in March 2011, our objective is to strengthen the action of Civil Society to prevent and control these diseases through political advocacy, education, awareness and research, at the national and regional level, so that effective policies are implemented, in line with the the objectives of the United Nations (UN), the World Health Organization (WHO) and its regional office, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and the NCD Alliance.

We want to build a healthy future by reducing the risk factors for these diseases, which are smoking, unhealthy diets, alcohol consumption, a sedentary lifestyle, and air pollution, always in accordance with the best scientific evidence.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, NCDs have increased the risk of hospitalization and death for those who contract this infection. Universal health coverage and equitable access to medicines is even more important.

A healthy future requires finding ways to reduce inequity and promote human rights, as well as addressing the so-called “determinants” of health, such as poverty and lack of education.

CLAS members include medical societies, patient organizations, health NGOs, consumer NGOs and academics. We all agree to work and act together to give greater strength to this health movement.

Alliances and networks

Our Allies

CLAS receives support and financing from different foundations and organizations
that allow us to develop all the activities we carry out.
Our positions

We build a common vision to transform it into action.

CLAS facilitates the development of consensual positions with leaders, experts and activists in the region, both from civil society and academics and government representatives. These positions allow for unified action, with common goals. A collaborative and interdisciplinary approach is required. Dialogue enriches the understanding of the various problems of the region. Consensus allows us to respond quickly both to support effective policies and to threats that seek to hinder progress towards a healthier society.
